Hidden Gem. A Nice Discovery.

One of the many stages in mining is sorting the rough.

Graded by the quality of the lattice and stone itself it is processed piece by piece by discoverer, miner and cutter Darren Arthur.

Higher grade material is cut by hand while the lower grade stones are designated for tumbling. Tumbling is a lengthy process where multiple stones are jostled about with various stages of grit in water (to put it very simply) until a nice polish is achieved. As this is done in a tumbler human eyes don’t get a good look at the results until the very end and I must say this human is impressed!

Hidden amongst the tumbling grade a spectacular piece was revealed! Its lattice concealed by a layer of opaque material removed by the tumbling process, this little gem deserved further attention.

Excitedly over to the wheels and the result is this stunning oval.

It was really nice to discover this gem amongst the tumbles. Kind of like getting an actual letter instead of just bills in the mail - unexpected in this digital age!
